Hot Spring Specialties

"Hyakusougan" - a traditional herbal medicine from Mt. Ontake
Since ancient times, as faith in Ontake spread, the Kiso Ontake "divine medicine" of a hundred herbs was spread to various regions by mountain ascetics, resulting in the herbal medicine "Hyakusougan" from Mt. Ontake. Currently, it is manufactured at the southern foot of Mt. Ontake by Nagano Prefecture Pharmaceuticals (Mitake Hyakusougan) and Hino Pharmaceuticals (Mt. Ontake Hino Hyakusougan). It is a stomach medicine whose main ingredient is Phellodendron bark, which is found in the inner layer of the bark of the Phellodendron amplexicaule, a deciduous tree of the Rutaceae family, and became popular as a home remedy for soldiers after the Meiji period. It is still used as a home remedy by locals today.

Nigorigo Onsen as the trailhead for the sacred Mount Ontake
Nigorigo Onsen is located near the trailhead on the Hida side at the 6th station of the sacred Mt. Ontake, at an altitude of about 1,800m, and is said to have been discovered in the mid-Edo period when Mt. Ontake was founded. Ontake worship has a long history, first thriving as a place of Shugendo, then linking with folk beliefs in the Middle Ages and developing into a mountain worship unique to Ontake. At the same time, the custom of group worship was born, and climbing the mountain is still practiced today. The Okusha Shrine of Ontake Shrine is enshrined at the summit of Mt. Ontake.
