Hot Spring Specialties

Freshly fried "Tempura Manju" is delicious
Hinodeya, a Japanese sweets shop located in Nakanosawa Onsen town, has a specialty called "Tempura Manju." As the name suggests, it is a manju deep-fried in the style of tempura, and comes in two varieties: a simple bean paste filling and a brown, smooth bean paste filling flavored with brown sugar. The moderately sweet bean paste is wrapped in a light golden brown batter, and the texture of the evenly fried batter matches perfectly. Once you order, it is fried immediately in the shop, so you'll want to dig into it hot and fresh.

Hot Springs

The hot spring area featured in the hit song "Kogen Ressha wa Iku"
Nakanosawa Onsen is the hot spring resort where Atsuro Okamoto's 1954 big hit song "The Highland Ressha wa Iku" (The Highland Train is Going), known for the line "If you wave your handkerchief from the train window...", was set. The song was written by a lyricist and composer with ties to Fukushima, and it was about the former Numajiri Light Railway, which transported visitors to Nakanosawa and Numajiri hot springs for hot spring treatments. The locals affectionately called it "Matchbox" and "Miniature Train". The railway was abolished in 1968 due to the closure of the mine, but a restored diesel locomotive and passenger cars remain in the "Green Village" in Naeshiro Town.
