Hot Spring Specialties

The rich, mellow, and nutritious taste of Yunosato
After Marie Curie discovered radium, the presence of radium was confirmed for the first time in Japan in Iizaka hot springs. The results were presented at an academic conference and caused a sensation. Taking advantage of this, Iizaka Onsen began selling hot spring eggs as "radium eggs". They are boiled for 30 minutes to a little over an hour in the 63-70 degree Celsius spring water, and the jelly-like white egg and creamy yolk, wrapped in the subtle aroma unique to the Glauber's salt spring, have a mellow taste that is packed with nutritional benefits. The softness of the eggs varies slightly from store to store.

Hot Springs

Iizaka Onsen, recorded in "Oku no Hosomichi"
In "Oku no Hosomichi," Matsuo Basho wrote about visiting Iizaka with his disciple Sora. On Apr. 20, Basho and his companions crossed the Shirakawa Barrier. Continuing further into the mountains, they visited Ioji Temple in Fukushima and the graves of the Sato brothers, renowned as loyal retainers of Yoshitsune, before taking a dip in Iizaka's "Taki no Yu" hot springs. Due to bad weather and staying in a simple bathhouse, they do not write about their good impressions, but having regained their energy in the hot springs, they headed for Matsushima. There is a statue of Basho in front of Iizaka Onsen Station, a literary monument beside the Surikami River, and a memorial stone on the site of the former inn.
