Hot Spring Specialties

A long-established yokan shop founded in the late Edo period
Founded in 1819, Matsumotoya's Mizuyokan is a popular souvenir from Higashiyama Onsen. Set up in the hot spring town, the shop served as a rest stop for visitors to the hot springs and peddlers, selling Japanese sweets and other daily necessities. Then, during the second generation, the shop began making Mizuyokan in earnest, which gained a reputation and led to the shop being dedicated to making Yokan. Made with carefully selected azuki beans from the local Aizu and Hokkaido, and the finest quality agar made in the bitterly cold Shinshu, the Mizuyokan has a flavor that has remained unchanged since ancient times, with a refined taste with a subdued sweetness.

Hot Springs

A historic hot spring that was once the domain bath of the Aizu clan
Higashiyama Onsen is said to have been discovered by Gyoki about 1,300 years ago. During the feudal era, it was called "Tennei-ji no Yu" and flourished as a hot springs resort. Kitsune-yu, a designated health resort for the Aizu clan, was taken over by the Hirata family in the Meiji era and became "Mukaitaki," with the building now a registered tangible cultural property of the country. Other historic inns line the Yukawa River, including Shintaki, which was the villa of Matsudaira, the lord of the Aizu clan. It is also known that at the end of the Edo period, Shinsengumi vice-chief Toshizo Hijikata visited the hot springs to treat an injury.
