Hot Spring Specialties

Manju unique to Kodakara no Yu
Since ancient times, the waters of Atsushio Onsen have been known as a place for raising children, and have been known to bestow many children. People who have been blessed with children can be seen bathing in the water and praying to the Child-raising Jizo statue at the entrance to Atsushio Onsen to give thanks. In commemoration of this, the nearby Ito Shop sells the famous "Child-raising Manju." The additive-free steamed manju, made with a Japanese azuki bean paste filling wrapped in a thin skin kneaded with brown sugar, has a simple taste.

Hot Springs

Jigenji Temple and Priest Gen'o
The history of Natsushio Onsen began when the priest Gen'o, who rebuilt Jigenji Temple, discovered the hot springs in 1380. It is said that the priest found salty water flowing in a nearby river and made it into a therapeutic hot springs resort. Natsushio Onsen draws its water from the source, Gen'o-yu. In memory of the virtues of the priest Gen'o, a bathing ceremony is held every year on Jan. 4th, and a procession of lit lanterns takes place.
