Hot Spring Specialties

Meringue sweets that helped Emperor Showa to relax
Asano Kogetsudo, which was founded in 1899, has a famous confectionery called "Matsuno Tsuyu" that was invented by the founder, Hisataro. Image by the mushroom "Matsuno Tsuyu" that grows wild in the pine forests of the Echizen coast, it is made by baking fresh egg whites and sugar into a light meringue and adding coffee powder to represent the natural soil. It is baked by hand every day by skilled craftsmen, and the delicate texture makes it memorable. There is an anecdote that Emperor Showa, relaxing at his Accommodation during his tour in 1947, requested a second serving of "Matsuno Tsuyu", and it is known as a nutritious confectionery that represents the region.

The Ashiwara Onsen Spring Festival, held every year on Apr. 29th, is a festival to honor the Three Yakushi, the guardians of the hot springs: Funatsu Onsen Yakushido, Tanaka Onsen Yakushi Shrine, and Futami Onsen Yakushido. The festival begins with a dazzling dance performance by geisha, followed by a portable shrine, a doll float, a cherry blossom float, and a drum float parade through the town, keeping the area lively all day long.
