Hot Spring Specialties

Botchan dumplings and Ichiroku tart
The most well-known souvenirs from Dogo Onsen that Natsume Soseki is said to have eaten on his way back from Dogo Onsen, is a skewered dumpling wrapped in three colors of bean paste: red bean paste, white bean paste, and matcha. Ichiroku Tart is a famous confectionery that is said to have been brought over from Nagasaki by Matsudaira Sadayuki, the first lord of Matsuyama Domain of the Hisamatsu clan, and uses only peeled red beans for the bean paste. They are particular about the ingredients and the manufacturing process, using fresh yuzu from Shikoku and the highest quality white double sugar.

Hot Springs

Natsume Soseki and Dogo Onsen
In 1895, Natsume Soseki, who was assigned as an English teacher at a junior high school in Matsuyama, wrote in "Botchan" and in his letters that "Dogo Onsen Onsen is no match for Tokyo in every respect, but the hot springs are excellent," and went on to praise it highly, saying, "It is a very fine building, and for eight sen you can go up to the third floor, drink tea, eat sweets, and when you get in the bath they even wash your head with soap. It is quite a nice place." It seems he really liked the hot springs in Dogo.
