Tourist Attraction Information

The 4km walking trail along the Yagen Gorge Stream is a great way to enjoy a stroll in about an hour. The Kamafusayama Observatory, ski resort, Lake Usori, and Mount Osore are also nearby.

Yagen Onsen is surrounded by virgin forests of hiba, so many of the inns boast baths and tubs made from hiba. Aomori hiba, known as a beautiful forest along with Akita 's cedar and Kiso's cypress, has many other advantages, such as excellent texture, fragrance, strength, and hardness, and its ingredients are effective against atopic dermatitis. Crafts that make use of these wonderful properties are also popular as souvenirs. Many people also love hiba soap and shampoo, which use oils extracted from hiba.

Located in the Shimokita Peninsula Quasi-National Park, Yagen Onsen and Okuyagen Onsen are in a valley that runs along the Ohata River and are famous tourist destinations. The surrounding mountains are covered with virgin forests, and the green and autumn leaves reflected on the surface of the river create a beautiful landscape. Every year from mid- to late Oct., Aomori hiba and beech trees, as well as wild cherry trees, mountain azaleas, and maples, change color, allowing you to enjoy the vibrant colors of the leaves while soaking in the hot springs. Also, every Oct., the Yagen Onsen Autumn Leaves Festival is held, where you can sample local delicacies.
