Hot Spring Specialties

The crunchy texture of Owani Onsen bean sprouts
Owani's specialty is "Owani Onsen bean sprouts," which are grown using the heat from the hot springs. Their history dates back more than 300 years. It is said that they were always presented to the third lord of the Tsugaru domain, Tsugaru Nobuyoshi, whenever he visited the hot springs for a cure, and records show that in 1663, the payment of tribute became mandatory. There are two types, soy bean sprouts and buckwheat sprouts, and bean sprouts are crunchy, low in calories and highly nutritious, making them particularly popular in today's health-conscious world. "Owani bean sprout ramen," which contains plenty of these sprouts, is also popular.

Hot Springs

A hot spring beloved as the palace bath of the Hirosaki domain
Owani Onsen has long been affectionately known as "Owani no Yukko," and developed as the inner sanctum of Tsugaru. It is said that the hot springs were first discovered about 800 years ago by the monk Enchi, who was on a pilgrimage to the eastern provinces during the Kenkyu era. During the Edo period, Tsugaru Narinobu, the first lord of the Hirosaki domain, visited the hot springs to treat an eye ailment, and the third lord, Nobuyoshi, who loved hot springs, developed it into a therapeutic hot spring resort and built a building called Okariya, and successive lords thereafter visited the hot springs for therapeutic purposes. It was so well known nationwide that it was featured in the Edo period book "Shokoku Onsen Kounokan."
