Hot Spring Specialties

Enjoy the rare smoked huchen fish
The hucho is known as a mythical fish due to its size and rarity, and is so famous that it even appears in the manga "Tsurikichi Sanpei." In Ajigasawa Town, these hucho are farmed by taking advantage of the clear streams, and smoked hucho are a local specialty of Ajigasawa. Wild hucho are also called "river fatty tuna" and have white flesh, but at the farmed stage, the flesh is orange, reminiscent of salmon, due to the feed they are fed. The flesh, which has been painstakingly smoked, can be eaten as is, with lemon juice squeezed on it, or as sushi, making it a versatile fish.

Hot Springs

A primeval beech forest that you can easily stroll through
Located about 30 minutes south of the center of town, "Mini Shirakami" is home to the same primeval Shirakami Sanchi Mountain Range forest as the core of the World Heritage site, Shirakami-Sanchi. The 52-hectare area, equivalent to 40 Tokyo Domes, is untouched by human hands and is home to a lush natural beech forest with trees over 200 years old, with a 2.8km long promenade winding around the trees. You can take a leisurely stroll while feeling close to nature, and even enjoy bird watching with binoculars and a bird guidebook in hand.
