Hot Spring Specialties

Hearty and delicious local cuisine with rustic charm
Ishiyaki cuisine was originally a dish made by local fishermen. Red hot stones are thrown into a wooden barrel and fish and other ingredients are instantly cooked. Contrary to its boldness, it firmens the fish and releases a seafood broth. It was also intended to satisfy the hunger of the fishermen and warm them up at the same time. After the war, Oga Hotel adapted this dish for use in their tatami rooms, which is what we know today as ishiyaki cuisine, and it is now served at many nearby inns and restaurants, with a wide variety of seasonings, from the traditional miso flavor to salt, soy sauce, and shottsuru-style.

Namahage: God, demon, and foreigner
Namahage, a traditional folk event in Oga that takes place from house to house on New Year's Eve, is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Namahage, messengers of the gods, wearing demon masks, keramino and habaki, and carrying large deba knives (or hatchets), visit houses asking, "Any bad children here? Any crying children here?," searching for lazy people, children and first brides. They are visiting deities who ward off misfortune and bring good harvests and good catches. In addition to the New Year's Eve event, the Namahage Sedo Festival is held in Feb. as a tourist event.
