野趣あふれる豪快でうまい郷土料理
石焼き料理は、元々は地元の漁師料理。木桶の中に真っ赤に焼けた石を投げ入れ、魚などを瞬時に煮上げる料理だ。豪快さとは裏腹に、魚の身が締まり、魚介類のだしも出る。漁師の空腹を満たすと同時に体を温める目的もあった。これを戦後、男鹿ホテルがお座敷向けにアレンジしたものが現在の石焼き料理で、今では近辺の多くの旅館や飲食店で提供され、味付けは従来の味噌仕立てから、塩味、醤油味、しょっつる風など変化に富む。

神とも鬼とも外国人とも伝わるなまはげ
大晦日に家々を巡って行われる男鹿の伝統的な民俗行事「なまはげ」は、国の重要無形民俗文化財。鬼の面、ケラミノ、ハバキを身に付け、大きな出刃包丁（または鉈）を持った神々の使者・なまはげが、「悪い子はいねがー」「泣ぐ子はいねがー」と家々を訪れ、怠け者や子ども、初嫁を探して練り歩く。厄災を祓い、豊作豊漁をもたらす来訪神だ。大晦日のほかに観光向け行事として「なまはげ柴灯まつり」が2月に行われる。
