Grand Prize

Plums with Red Fuji

Pen name: Youn-san (living in Ibaraki Prefecture)

I often participate in photography tours where I can enjoy taking pictures at my own pace. This is a photo I took at Iwamotoyama Park, which I have been to many times before. I took this photo at a moment when the red color of the plum blossoms stood out and Mt. Fuji was not backlit. The weather was good and the position was perfect, so this is one of my favorites.

Evaluation

This is a scene of Mt. Fuji that is filled with refreshing light and air. Not only is the composition flawless, but the split-second shutter opportunity as the "Red Fuji" passes is also spot-on. The distribution of the red and white plum blossoms on the screen also brings out the best in Mt. Fuji and is flawless. This is a rare "Beautiful View of Mt. Fuji" that is filled with both dignified elegance and splendor, as if you could smell the scent of early morning plum blossoms in the air.

Excellence Award

Byobuiwa Park in Spring

Kazumasa Yoshida (resident of Nara Prefecture)

With the 200m-high cliff of Byobu Rock towering over 940m above sea level as a backdrop, 300 ancient mountain cherry trees, some over 100 years old, are in full bloom. I took a photo, soothed by the magnificent view of the blue sky, Byobu Rock, and the pale pink mountain cherry trees.

Evaluation

Blessed with fine weather, the colors of the cherry blossoms in full bloom are beautiful, and the image has a light feel despite the heavy composition. Usually, a branch that runs straight through the image would look too strong, but the presence of the massive Byobu Rock creates a good accent against the blue sky, enhancing the effect. The intricately columnar-jointed rock surface and the smoky cherry blossoms in the distance create a good contrast, creating a wonderful spring scene.

Autumn colors of Oyasu Gorge

Yoshio Akashi (resident of Mie Prefecture)

This photo was taken from a bridge over Oyasu Gorge as the morning mist descended. The leaves were just starting to change color, and it was a little early for the autumn colors, but the red, yellow, and green leaves created a beautiful gradation. I waited patiently for the sun to rise, and took the picture while paying careful attention to the light at the moment the mist cleared.

Evaluation

The distinctive V-shaped topography of Oyasu Gorge, a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves, is captured from directly above with a telephoto lens, creating a powerful composition. The movement of the mist is well captured, effectively emphasizing the sense of perspective, and allowing the photographer to portray the mysterious autumn valley with depth. The reflection on the river's surface is also effective in drawing the eye. The photographer's sense and compositional ability shine through in this rare opportunity.

Honorable Mention

Maruyama Senmaida at dusk

イメージ

Takemasa Yamamoto (resident of Shizuoka Prefecture)

This was my first time visiting Maruyama Senmaida. I went there to take pictures of the sunset, but a while after I took the picture, the beautiful night view appeared. I was moved by the unseen Japanese scenery that I had unexpectedly encountered, so I took the picture. By using a slow shutter speed, the red car lights became a nice accent.

Evaluation

This piece expresses the beauty of the delicate shapes of rice terraces, a heritage that our ancestors have painstakingly built. By choosing a time of day when the afterglow was still reflected on the water's surface at twilight, the many ridges emerge in beautiful relief. The light trails of red taillights shining here and there add a nice accent.

Enjoy boating on Lake Bishamon

イメージ

Hiromasa Yoshida (Tokyo resident)

This is a shot from Goshiki-numa and Bishamon-numa Urabandai. I was careful to take a beautiful shot of the green leaves and the mountainside of Mt. Bandai in the background, while paying attention to the position of the moving boat. I started taking pictures after I retired, and now traveling to take photos is one of my hobbies.

Evaluation

This work conveys the atmosphere of a quiet summer resort well, and is never boring to look at. The boat plays an important role as the only moving part of the scenery, and the mountains in the background make you imagine a world beyond, giving the work depth. It's a wonderful photo that makes you feel like you can even hear the cuckoo's call.

The Gloriette of Schönbrunn Palace in the winter sunset

イメージ

Pen name: Emily.i (living Tokyo)

This photo was taken in Vienna, Austria. The clouds were shining orange in the sunset. The pond in front of the Gloriette was frozen, so I tried to find a place where the building would be reflected on the water. I was soothed by the open garden and the beautiful scenery.

Evaluation

In addition to the beautiful colors of the still blue sky and the sunset, the taut, stiff winter air dominates the entire image, making it very appealing. I was also impressed by the photography technique, which managed to keep the details of the people and buildings in focus. The idea of amplifying the sunset with the water surface was also effective.

Fragrant Breeze Hill

イメージ

Masaru Yamauchi (resident of Hyogo Prefecture)

When the air warms, the sea breeze from Osaka Bay blows in. I captured on camera the air currents wrapping the hills in the scent of rape blossoms. I hope that the floating clouds and the people strolling leisurely through the flower fields will give you a sense of the fragrant spring air.

Evaluation

The colors are eye-opening. It's just like Yamamura Bocho's poem "A whole field of rapeseed flowers." The wide-angle lens emphasizes the vastness of the hill, and the technique of highlighting the volume of the flowers and the distant scenery is successful. The entire frame is in focus, so you won't get bored by gazing at every detail. The clouds and people are also captured at a good moment.

Night view of Otaru Canal

イメージ

Toshiko Yamamoto (resident of Shizuoka Prefecture)

I enjoyed my trip Hokkaido, taking pictures of the moments that made me feel "beautiful!" The atmosphere changed at night, and the townscape looked even more beautiful. The photo of the Otaru Canal in particular captured the moving scenery well. I want to go back to Hokkaido, which is full of beautiful scenery.

Evaluation

The Otaru Canal exudes a mysterious atmosphere with a mix of the afterglow just after sunset (blue hour) and the surrounding artificial light. The framing is quite skillful, gently drawing the eye along the beautiful, colorful water surface into the depths of the picture. It is full of exotic charm that stimulates the desire to travel.
