Grand Prize

Spring is over

Yoshio Akashi (resident of Mie Prefecture)

This is the view from the summit of Mt. Shiude. I waited until the soft early morning light lit up the entire cherry blossom tree branch before pressing the shutter. I struggled to find the right balance between the cherry tree branches and the islands. The partial backlighting made the islands in the background stand out softly, creating a work that resembled a Japanese painting.

Evaluation

Mount Shiude in Kagawa Prefecture is a great spot from which to view the beauty of the many islands in the Seto Inland Sea. It is especially known as a place to photograph cherry blossoms in spring, attracting many photographers. This work was shot in favorable weather conditions, with the morning sunlight and spring haze blending together to create a dreamlike beauty. The composition of the image is also skillful, with the overlapping islands beyond the well-branched cherry blossoms inviting the eye to a distant world.

Excellence Award

Uluru at sunrise

Naohiro Izumi (resident of Hokkaido)

This is a photo I took when I went on a Club Tourism tour with my family. We left the hotel before dawn and waited for the sunrise at the observation deck. It wasn't a clear day, but I was lucky enough to capture the morning glow shining for a moment in the silent land of Uluru, whose colors changed minute by minute.

Evaluation

Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Australia is also known as the "navel of the earth." The second largest monolith in the world, this 335m-tall rock mountain contains iron and shines bright red in the morning and evening sun. This work conveys all of these characteristics, accurately depicting the distinctive vertically carved rock walls and beautiful colors with a solid presence.

Autumn Leaves Clothing

Yutaka Imada (resident of Hyogo Prefecture)

This photo was taken from Jogakura Bridge in Towada Hachimantai National Park. I shot this around 7am in late Oct., when the light of the morning glow was reflected on the autumn leaves of the beech forest. The highlight is being able to see Mt. Iwaki in the distance. Touring Towada and taking a bath in Oirase Stream Hot Springs are also fond memories of the trip.

Evaluation

Autumn foliage in Towada Hachimantai National Park, Aomori Prefecture. The mountains, truly clothed in the garb of autumn, are beautifully framed. It is a bliss for the eyes to trace the picture, admiring the autumn colors along the intricately intertwined ridgelines. Is that the famous Mt. Iwaki, visible in the haze in the distance on the left? The delicate beauty of the pristine mountains, completely free of man-made objects. This photo makes you feel grateful to have been born in Japan.

Honorable Mention

Venice remains as lively as ever

Image

Pen name: Namihee-san (living Tokyo)

It was Overseas Travel in three years. The sky was clear and cloudless that day, and Venice was crowded with many tourists. I saw a gondola rowing at an excellent angle, and excitedly took a picture. This is my favorite photo of the Rialto Bridge, a popular spot in Venice, and a gondola in one shot.

Evaluation

Venice, the city of water, is an Italian city that has long been known as the setting for movies and novels. In recent years, there have been concerns about rising sea levels, but the city remains popular with tourists. The contrast between the refreshing sky and the colorful townscape is beautiful, and the bustling canals are captured well with gondolas as the focal point.

Shikisai no Oka Hokkaido

Image

Miyoko Ota (resident of Kanagawa Prefecture)

I visited Shikisai-no-Oka twenty-odd years ago, but when I looked at the tour catalogue, I wanted to go again, so I went back. The flower fields were even more vast under the clear blue sky, and I was so engrossed in taking pictures. Both my husband and I enjoy photography as a hobby, and it seems that continuing to travel together is the secret to our health.

Evaluation

The flower fields of Biei are popular with tourists from Japan and abroad. The fun of this place is being able to paint your own "picture" by framing and exposure settings. The artist used a slightly underexposed setting and captured a large shot of the sky, resulting in a rather chic landscape painting. His bold sense of using the movement of the clouds stands out.

Diamond Fuji

Image

Isamu Hirano (resident of Chiba Prefecture)

This photo was taken in Dec. when I went to Hana no Miyako Park in Lake Yamanaka on a Club Tourism tour. I set up my tripod and waited at sunset, but it never showed up. Just when I was about to give up, I finally saw it. I've tried several times before, but this was the first time I was lucky enough to capture Diamond Fuji.

Evaluation

Diamond Fuji photographed from Hana no Miyako Park in Yamanakako Village. The radiance of the sun perched atop the mountain was captured in a divine way. There were a lot of clouds around the peak, but the mountain's shape was not too clearly visible, and the fact that it remained at this level made it even more dramatic.

A waterfall that stands out against the fresh greenery

Image

Hiromasa Yoshida (Tokyo resident)

I took this photo with the intention of capturing the spectacular waterfall gushing down from the vibrant greenery of the shoreline, and the sight of tourists enjoying the view. The waterfall was so powerful that I was worried I might fall into it, but I think I was able to take the photo calmly. It's a place I'd also like to visit and take photos in autumn or snow.

Evaluation

This work captures the powerful Fukiware Falls Falls in Gunma Prefecture. The camera angle is low and the flow in the foreground is captured in a wide shot, so you can almost hear the roar of the water. It creates the effect of being sucked into the huge pool in the center of the screen. The fresh greenery on the opposite bank is also depicted very vividly.

Hanging clouds at dawn

Image

Toshiko Yamamoto (resident of Shizuoka Prefecture)

This photo was taken just before dawn at Lake Tanuki, where my husband and I visited. The weather was great that day, with just the right amount of cloud cover, making it the perfect day for photography. I took this photo early in the morning in early autumn, shivering from the cold, until the wind died down. The morning glow and the inverted Mt. Fuji were beautiful, and I was particularly pleased with the result.

Evaluation

A vivid, eye-opening view of Mt. Fuji in the morning glow from Lake Tanuki in Shizuoka Prefecture. The clear silhouette of Mt. Fuji with hanging clouds on its shoulders and the sharp contrast of the colors give a clear, early morning feeling. The wind seems calm, and the depiction of the inverted Mt. Fuji is also magnificent.
