Located about 17km offshore from Ishinomaki, Tashirojima is surrounded by cobalt blue seas and is an island where you can enjoy scenic nature. There are more cats on the island than there are people, so you are more likely to encounter cats than people, making it a paradise for cat lovers.
The island has a circumference of about 11km. Over 130 cats live here freely. None of the cats are afraid of people, but they don't approach them either. It is said that the cats on this island are characterized by their normal lifestyle. They wait for the fishermen to return by boat at the harbor, sit on the benches in the square, and do the things people do.
The islanders also cherish their cats. For generations, fishermen on Tashirojima have been able to predict the day's weather and the amount of fish they could catch by watching the behavior of their cats. One day, a cat died due to carelessness, and the grieving fishermen enshrined it here as a cat god. This "Cat Shrine" is still worshiped today as the guardian deity of the island.
Due to the recent cat boom, many cat lovers have started to visit the island on weekends. Therefore, in order to allow people to enjoy spending time with the cats on the island, there are rules such as not feeding the cats, not taking photos in the middle of the road, only watching over kittens, not entering the premises of island residents' houses, and helping by taking your trash home. These are rules that you want to follow, especially since this is a precious cat island that you can't see in the city.
There are regular ferries to Tashirojima from Ishinomaki Port. If you're feeling a bit tired from your daily routine, it might be a good idea to come here and spend some time soothed by the cats.

The Sanriku coast, where three ocean currents, the Kuroshio Current, the Oyashio Current, and the Tsugaru Warm Current, intersect, is rich in plankton and the fish and shellfish that feed on it, making it one of the three largest fishing grounds in the world. Miyagi also has large fishing ports off the Sanriku coast, including Shiogama, Ishinomaki, and Kesennuma.
Sendai Zuke Donburi is a notable local delicacy that is made using seafood caught in the seas of Miyagi and combined with rice produced in Miyagi Prefecture, and is lovingly prepared by sushi chefs in Miyagi.
Sendai Zuke Donburi was developed in 2009 by the Sendai Sushi Industry Association and others, and the number of restaurants serving it in Sendai has increased dramatically since then, as a way to support the recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Since then, various restaurants have continued to serve Sendai Zuke Donburi with different ingredients and seasonings, and it has now become a local dish that represents Sendai.
The bowl, decorated with white fish seasoned with Sendai miso and soy sauce and colorful shredded egg, is as colorful and exquisite as a jewel box. If you visit Sendai, be sure to give it a try.
