日本有数の秘湯として温泉好きから好評を博す温泉。かつては秋田藩主の湯治場として利用されていました。温泉名物は「山の芋鍋」。ふわふわの芋だんごが浮かぶ鍋料理は、地域の板前が腕によりをかけて編み出したご当地鍋。鶏肉や鴨、豚肉などを具に、飲食店や宿泊施設それぞれが、独自に味付けを凝らしています。

Nishimonai Bon Dance
祭りの起源は豊年祭りとも盆供養ともいわれる、羽後町の伝統行事です。上方風の踊りは、あやしいまでに美しく、700年にわたる文化と歴史を今に伝えています。笛・大太鼓などの演奏のほか、うたい手が加わったはやしはにぎやかで勇ましく、流麗な踊りとは対照的。あでやかな衣装と鳥追い笠、黒い彦三頭巾姿の不気味な姿から「亡者踊り」との別名もある、妖しくも美しい踊りです。

秋田の県魚「ハタハタ」を食べ尽くす
きりたんぽ、稲庭うどん、比内地鶏……ご当地グルメに事欠かない秋田。どれをとっても美味しいので、旅先での食事に迷ってしまいますよね。中でも秋から冬にかけての季節におすすめしたいのが、秋田県の県魚にもなっているハタハタ。雷鳴轟く晩秋～冬の時季に獲れたことから、雷神（ハタタガミ）の名を取って「ハタハタ（鰰）」と名付けられた魚です。
ウロコがなく骨も柔らかいハタハタは、焼いても煮ても食べやすい魚。白身魚ですが甘みもあり絶品です。
秋田流の食べ方としては、郷土料理「しょっつる鍋」が有名。塩漬けのハタハタを発酵させてつくる魚醬（しょっつる）で味付けした鍋に、生のハタハタを入れたものです。
調味料にも具にもハタハタが使われているしょっつる鍋は、まさにハタハタ三昧。旬の魚を思う存分堪能できる郷土料理です。
