A fulfilling island trip with all the perfect sights, history, and fun
Yashima is considered a physical and spiritual symbol of Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. Until the Edo period, it was an island separated from the mainland, but due to the development of salt fields and the reclamation of reclaimed rice fields, it is now connected to the mainland. Visiting Yashima, with its rich natural environment and long history on a distinctive topography, is somehow exciting. An island that can be reached by train is a little mysterious and interesting, isn't it? Yashima is loved by locals, and also attracts the attention of tourists. Yashima is home to the ancient battlefield where the Genpei War took place. It is a historic place with many historical sites, such as the "Hidden Ship" where the Heike clan hid their warships, and the "Prayer Rock" where Nasu Yoichi, the "best archer of the Genji clan," prayed for the Heike clan's fan to hit the target. There are Other many other attractions, such as Yashima Temple, the 84th temple of Shikoku Pilgrimage, and the unique mountaintop aquarium, the "Shin-Yashima Aquarium." In recent years, the "Takamatsu City Yashima Mountain Base Facility (tentative name)" has been under construction at Shishi no Reigan, an observation spot on the top of Mt. Yashima. It is Itinerary to be a multi-purpose complex that will include an observation space where you can enjoy the magnificent scenery from the top of the mountain, an exhibition space for learning, and a large hall that can accommodate international conferences. We are looking forward to the development of a new "Yashima" that can be enjoyed by both tourists and locals.
Escape from the everyday on an island where nostalgia and art coexist
After a 15-minute boat ride from Suda Port in Mitoyo City, you will be greeted by a simple landscape that will make you feel nostalgic... Awashima in Kagawa Prefecture is a place where time flows slowly and will refresh your soul. One of the charms of this small island is that it is within walking distance of many attractions, including the Awashima Maritime Memorial Museum, Japan's oldest maritime training school, with its irresistibly photogenic pale green color, the Art Canvas Awashima guesthouse renovated from an old house, and the torii gate of Makihachiman Shrine, which stands on the seaside where the approach to the shrine leads to the sandy beach.
Did you know that there is a unique post office on Awashima Island? It is called the "Drifting Post Office." It is an art project that uses a 50-year-old post office, created by contemporary artist Saya Kubota, and was created on the occasion of the second Setouchi Triennale. The Drifting Post Office is a post office that accepts "letters without an address." You can send letters to anything, whether it be the past, present, future, things, events, or people. The letters that arrive are stored in tin boxes inside the post office, and if you visit, you can pick up and read any letter that has arrived from all over the country, and sometimes even overseas. In an age where many people are connected by the Internet and even SNS, the time spent taking the time to write a letter is sure to be special. Wouldn't it be wonderful to leave a letter filled with hopes for your trip at the "Drifting Post Office" and visit it someday to look for the handwritten message?
