Wakayama Castle
Wakayama Castle stands on Mount Torafusuyama in Wakayama City. It began when Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who pacified Kishu in 1585, ordered his brother Hidenaga to build the castle. During the Edo period, it had a long history as the castle of the Kishu Domain Kishu Tokugawa family, one of the three main branches of the Tokugawa clan. The current castle tower was rebuilt in 1958 and features a rare structure called a joint castle tower. The entire site is a park, and cherry blossoms bloom in spring. At the Wakayama Castle Otenshu Chaya in front of the castle tower, you can eat udon and soba noodles made with Wakayama ingredients, soft serve ice cream topped with fruit, and purchase a castle seal as a souvenir of your visit to the castle.

Along with Mount Hiei, it is a sacred place in Japanese Buddhism. There are 117 temples on the mountain, including Kongobu-ji Temple, the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect. There are many things to see, but the central holy place of the Daishi faith, Okunoin, where Kobo Daishi's mausoleum is located, is a sacred place with about 200,000 gravestones and memorial services. The evolving beauty of traditional Kishu lacquerware
Kishu lacquerware is the main industry of Kuroe, Kainan City, which was once called "Kuroe-nuri". Its characteristics are that it is simple, strong, and highly durable, making it practical. It was popular as an everyday item for the common people during the Edo period. Now, Kuroe is working on various initiatives to spread the appeal of Kishu lacquerware.
"KISHU+" is a brand that is challenging itself with creating works that combine traditional techniques with digital technology. The many works, which are created with expressions that cannot be achieved by hand or machines alone, are attracting attention not only from within Japan but also from overseas as new works using Kishu lacquerware.
Kishu lacquerware continues to evolve while preserving tradition, and some items are microwave-safe, making them perfect for everyday use or as souvenirs. Be sure to check them out.
The bitter and delicious mythical fruit "Jabara"
When it comes to fruits in Wakayama Prefecture, the most famous is the "Arita mikan" from Arita, the home of Unshu mikan. It is characterized by its high sugar content and rich flavor. Wakayama Prefecture, the "mikan kingdom," is also home to a thriving cultivation of the "jabara" fruit, which is said to be a mythical fruit.
Jabara is a citrus fruit related to yuzu and kabosu, and grows wild only in Kitayama Village, Wakayama Prefecture, in Japan. Jabara cultivation started with just one tree, and this "mythical fruit" that is only found here in Japan has now become a specialty product of the entire Wakayama Prefecture, with various products being developed, such as jam and ponzu sauce. One such product is "Jakiharai Soy Sauce" (Kumano Co., Ltd.), which combines soy sauce and jabara. The appeal of jabara products is the wide variety. When you visit Wakayama Prefecture, be sure to find your favorite.
