Biwa lake

Located in the center of Shiga Prefecture, Lake Biwa is the largest lake in Japan. The road has little elevation change, making it ideal for cycling or motorcycling. Boat cruises are also recommended. You can enjoy meals on the boat while taking in the spectacular views, and in the summer there are beer gardens. There are many tourist spots around Lake Biwa, so be sure to stop by.

Omihachiman

Omihachiman City is famous for Hachimanbori and Suigo Meguri. With its white-walled storehouses, mansions built by wealthy merchants, and stone wall scenery, the cityscape is as if time had stopped several centuries ago, making it a tourist spot that is fun to stroll around.

Hikone Castle

Located on the east side of Lake Biwa, this castle was built in the early Edo period. It is a popular tourist spot that has been designated a national treasure along with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle, and was also selected as one of Japan's 100 most famous castles. Highlights include the castle tower, which features stunning decorations with beautiful metal fittings and black lacquer, and the Tenbin Yagura, which has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

View of the atmospheric Hachimanbori canal from a boat

Shiga is famous for Lake Biwa, but the surrounding area is also filled with idyllic scenery of abundant water and greenery. Among them, Omihachiman is perhaps best known as a water town.
In the past, Omihachiman developed a shipping route on Lake Biwa as a means of public transportation. Ships were able to enter the city center from Lake Biwa, which supported the business of Omi merchants. In particular, Hachimanbori was a major artery of the town, which led to the prosperity of the castle town under Toyotomi Hidetsugu's Hachimanyama Castle during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. In the late Edo period, it is said to have been as prosperous as Otsu in Omi Province.
Due to the development of land transportation after the war, Hachimanbori fell into disuse for a time, but in recent years it has been renovated and the wharf and other facilities have been restored. White-walled storehouses and old houses line the canal, giving a glimpse of the prosperity of the past. Why not enjoy the beautiful nature of the four seasons and the old-fashioned townscape as you are rocked along on your boat?

Pray for good fortune on the mysterious island of Chikubushima!

Shiga is rich in nature and has many scenic spots, and Chikubushima is one of the popular spots. It is known for its Hogonji Temple, which is one of the three major Benten shrines in Japan, and Tsukubusuma Shrine. Chikubushima is also full of good luck spots. Why not visit Chikubushima to pray for good luck?
If you come to Benzaitendo, you should definitely try out the "Benten's Happiness Wish Daruma." Choose your favorite Daruma and offer it up with a piece of paper with your wish written on it. It is said that the Daruma will grant your wish. The small red Daruma is very cute, isn't it? Also, at the Dragon God Worship Site, you can try throwing tiles to make a wish. The tiles are engraved with characters for warding off evil, and you write your name on the first tile you purchase and your wish on the second. You throw them at the torii gates, throwing them in the order of your name and wish, and if you manage to get them through the torii gates, your wish is a success. It's surprisingly difficult to get them through the torii gates twice in a row... Give it a try. Enjoy a unique experience on Chikubushima and receive some blessings!
