Enjoy Uji tea in the birthplace of Japanese green tea
Uji tea is known as one of the three most famous teas in Japan, along with Shizuoka tea and Sayama tea. It is popular for its fragrant and well-rounded flavor, and many people buy Uji tea as a souvenir when they visit Kyoto.
One of the main production areas of Uji tea is Uji Town in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture. Tea production began during the Kamakura period, and in 1379 it was given the strong patronage of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu.
In the middle of the Edo period, a man from this town named Nagatani Soen developed the "Aosei Sencha manufacturing method," which became the foundation of modern Uji tea in Edo. Since then, Uji cho has been called the "birthplace of Japanese green tea," and has become a major Uji tea production area lined with tea farmers and tea wholesalers. Even today, you can purchase delicious Uji tea at the tea manufacturer's direct sales store in town.
If you visit Uji cho, you must see his birthplace, which has been restored and preserved in honor of his achievements! You can see valuable materials such as tea-making tools from that time. Also, the nearby Chasomyōjin Shrine enshrines Soen, and tea merchants from all over the country come to worship there. If you are a tea lover, please come to Uji cho to follow in Soen's footsteps and enjoy some delicious tea.
"Tango Chirimen" with 300 years of history
The Tango region in northern Kyoto Prefecture has a humid climate with a lot of rain, so much so that the saying goes, "Even if you forget your lunch, don't forget your umbrella." It was well suited to the production of silk fabrics, which do not like dryness. The "Tango Chirimen" made here is a silk fabric with a history of over 300 years. It is characterized by its supple feel and deep colors, due to the fine unevenness of the surface called "shibo." While treasuring the long history of Tango Chirimen, artisans continue to challenge themselves to create works that are suitable for the modern era.
In Yosano Town, which prospered with Tango Chirimen, you can not only tour Tango Chirimen workshops, but also experience making silk coasters using hand looms and thread-wound lamps. Why not try making a one-of-a-kind souvenir during your trip?
