"Edo Kiriko" - Sparkling and intricate patterns

In Tokyo, the capital of Japan, various cultures blossomed during the Edo period. Many of these have been passed down and remain to this day. One of them is "Edo Kiriko." The cutting techniques as we know them today were established during the Meiji period, but Edo Kiriko was born in the late Edo period. It is said that it began when wholesaler Kagaya Kyubei and others applied cut glasswork to glass products brought over from overseas by the Southern Barbarians. The traditional patterns are stylized designs of Edo-period everyday items such as plants like chrysanthemums and hemp leaves, and lattices. Traditional patterns centered on straight lines are beautiful, but nowadays, new methods of expression that include soft curves are also appearing. The reason why Edo Kiriko patterns were often geometric is said to be due to the tools used. Patterns were cut from hard glass with a rotating grinder, making it difficult to create curves and fine details. Therefore, new tools that are not traditional are used to create new expressions. Edo Kiriko, which evolves while preserving tradition, will continue to be a focus of attention.

A relaxing Edogawa Cruise on the "Yagiri Ferry"

Tokyo has been used in dramas and movies everywhere, but Shibamata Teishakuten Sando is also famous as a filming location. The retro townscape is attractive, and you will feel like you have traveled back in time to the Showa era. If you want to visit the Shibamata Emperor Shakuten Shrine, why not use the only remaining ferry in Tokyo, the Yagiri no Tori? It is the name of a historic ferry that has been around since the early Edo period, and connects Katsushika Ward, Tokyo across the Edo River, and Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture. What an old-fashioned rowing! Forget the hustle and bustle of the city, the Edogawa Cruise, which is about 5 minutes away, can only be experienced here. * Depending on the weather and the flow of the river, a motor may be used. If the weather is good, you can also see the Tokyo Sky Tree. There is no doubt that the gap between the retro ferry that has been around since the Edo period and the appearance of the Tokyo Sky Tree, which does not seem to be in the same era, will make you feel strange.
