Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan's leading hot springs, located in the northwest of Gunma Prefecture. It is one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan, and boasts an abundant supply of hot water and its quality. In the center of the hot spring town is the "Yubata", where the smell of sulfur wafts from the steam that covers the area. Because the temperature of the hot spring is high, the "Yumomi" method of lowering the temperature using wooden boards is famous. There are more than 150 inns lined up, and you can choose from a variety of Accommodation to suit your group size and preferences, from traditional inns to large hotels. There are tourist spots such as Anamori Inari Shrine and Kusatsu Shiraneyama in the surrounding area. Kusatsu Onsen is known as the "Okumiage no Yu" hot spring used by Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, and in the Edo period it was always ranked at the top of the "Hot Spring Rankings" in the east and was very popular. Why not relax and soothe your daily fatigue in this historic hot spring?

Tomioka Silk Mill

Tomioka Silk Mill was established in 1872 (Meiji 5) under the direction of Frenchman Brunat at the request of the Meiji government. It is considered a representative example of factory architecture that combines Japanese and Western technology, and most of the original buildings remain intact. It is rare to find a factory from the late 19th century remaining anywhere in the world, and this building holds great significance as the birthplace of a building that contributed to the modernization of Japanese industry. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2014 and has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. The main facility where thread was made, the "Spinning Mill," is a must-see. The surrounding area is dotted with restaurants with good reputations for lunch, such as "Oginoya," famous for its kamameshi (rice cooked in a pot), and "Mendokoro Hayami," where you can eat the local dish of stewed noodles, "Okkirikomi."

Fukiware Falls

(Image)

This waterfall is located in Numata City, in the northern part of Gunma Prefecture. It has a unique shape with water flowing down from three sides into a cleft in the rocks, and is called the "Niagara of Toyo" due to its overwhelming power. It is a rare, long waterfall. It has a drop of about 7m and a width of about 30m, and the sight of it roaring and spraying water as it flows is simply breathtaking. In spring, the amount of water increases with melting snow, making it even more impressive. In summer, it is a healing place with a cool breeze blowing through, and in autumn, it is a popular spot for viewing autumn leaves. There are many tourist spots in the surrounding area, such as "Hannya Rock", named after the towering rock wall that resembles the human demon, and "Masutobi Falls", which has a drop of about 15m. For those who want to spend a relaxing time, we also recommend "Oigami Onsen".

Jomo Karuta Image

"Jomo Karuta" is a well-known game among Gunma residents.

Have you heard of "Jomo Karuta"? It is a card game full of local pride, depicting Gunma's specialties, history, and famous places, and is well known to all Gunma residents.
for example…
"Asama's mischief, the demon's push-out"
"The waterfall is blown up, Katashina Valley"
These karuta cards were originally created in 1947 so that children could learn in a fun way. Even today, karuta tournaments are held in elementary schools all over the country in the winter. These karuta tournaments are a familiar winter tradition in Gunma Prefecture, and are said to be even more popular than the Hyakunin Isshu.
"Jomo Karuta" is loved by the locals. Even if you can't see it all at once, it might be fun to take a trip around the famous places written on the cards little by little.

"Creative Kokeshi" with a wide variety of designs

Gunma Prefecture is the number one producer of creative kokeshi dolls in Japan. They are characterized by their freedom without being bound by shape, and compared to the traditional kokeshi dolls of Tohoku, Gunma kokeshi dolls are called "modern kokeshi dolls."
Creative Kokeshi became widely known with the appearance of fancy Kokeshi. Their round, round form and cute expressions are popular not only with older people but also with younger people. The more the boom, the more creative Kokeshi became known to a wide range of generations.
Even now, there are many unique pieces, such as those featuring characters from popular manga, which are attracting attention not only from within Japan but also from overseas. Perhaps the reason they are loved by so many people is because of their designs that blend in with any room decoration and the warmth that only wood can provide.
