Enjoy eating, pulling and decorating! Okayama peaches
Okayama is famous for its peaches. The cultivation of peaches, the prefecture's representative fruit, began in 1875. Thanks to the continuous improvement and development of peaches introduced from China by our predecessors, the prefecture has become a major peach production area with more than 30 varieties produced today. Peach picking can be enjoyed at farms throughout the prefecture from late Jun. to early Sep. every year.
Okayama Peaches produced in the prefecture are characterized by their elegant whiteness. The peaches are grown in bags so that they are not exposed to direct Nikko rays, which makes them white in appearance and smooth to the palate.
Did you know that you can enjoy peaches not only by eating them at Okayama? Okayama At the Kibitsuhiko Shrine in the city, you can draw a "Shiro-tomo-mikuji" (a written oracle written in the shape of a peach), which comes in a ceramic container shaped like a peach.
In Okayama, where the legend of Momotaro remains, peaches are a symbol to ward off evil. After drawing the Shiratomo-mikuji, please display the ceramic peach at home.
Manabe Island, where time flows slowly
Manabe Island is an old fishing village located about 40 minutes by regular passenger boat from Kasaoka City. With its wooden school building, Manabe Junior High School, and other nostalgic townscapes, it has been used as a location for many movies.
Manabeshima once prospered as the headquarters of the Fujiwara clan's "Navy." Today, the island enjoys the tranquil atmosphere of a port town, and many tourists visit to find relaxation.
Manabe Island is also known as the "Cat Island" because there are more cats than people. There are two ports on Manabe Island, and at Motoura Port, the main ferry port with a lot of human traffic, you will be greeted by friendly cats. Around Iwatsubo Port, which has less people, you can meet some slightly shy cats.
Why not visit Manabejima to see the retro townscape, delicious fish caught in the harbor, and encounter the quirky cats?
